Design change announced for Prius in Red


When auto manufactures make bold design changes, it underscores the importance of the "art" side of consumerism. Fine art vs. graphic design or industrial design has a similar starting point: to tell a message visually. Yet the paths to get there today take you to an outcome that may not seem connected. When a company like Toyota announced on July 6th that it would use solar panels to power part of the energy required to operate a car, it's design team had to work with a visual message - to ensure consumers would accept a vehicle's looks. Seeing is believing and after proving demand unquestionably, the Prius is the first production vehicle of note to "boldly go where no one has gone before" and place panels on consumer ready vehicles. The Japanese consumer rather than the American is the first to benefit.
